UGA Research Feature: For the love of salt marshes: Michelle Covi fights for coastal resiliency

In a new research profile by UGA Research News, Michelle Covi explains what led her to a lifelong career advocating for salt marshes. Covi is the coastal resilience liaison for Department of Defense under UGA’s Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant.

Covi is an incredibly active member of UGA’s campus, and spoke about her mission to communicate between various units for coastal resilience innovation: “For example, I connected some folks from the UGA Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems in the College of Engineering with a natural resources manager at Fort Stewart to look at a salt marsh changing due to a tide gate  designed to protect a railroad bridge. An engineering student is now working on a nature-based alternative,” Covi said. “I find that working with colleagues and communities fit my personality better and allow me to make that impact I want. In fact, a lot of what I do is connecting people and groups.”
