Research can’t exist in a bubble- and UGA faculty are making sure we bring nature-based solutions research to the forefront.
IRIS’s newest Professor of Practice, Ram Mohan, and Institute of Government Public Service Assistant Ben Carswell recently participated in a panel discussion at the Georgia Environmental Conference at Jekyll Island, GA.

The panel, moderated by Carswell, was titled “Bringing Nature-based Solutions and Natural Infrastructure into the Mainstream” and included experienced coastal engineer Mohan, as well as The Nature Conservancy South Carolina’s Liz Fly, Georgia Conservancy’s Courtney Reich, and Meghan Angelina from GADNR’s Coastal Resource Division. The session was also organized by David Bell from Jacobs.
Session description: Principles and practices that promote and leverage natural systems to enhance community resilience to climate change and other environmental stressors are becoming more commonplace and widespread. With substantial government investments accelerating this trend, practitioners across sectors are working to transition from conceptual designs to successful implementation and build on lessons learned from prototypes and pilots to scale up while establishing specifications and guidelines. Regional collaborations seek to harness and strategically coordinate these efforts to advance broader goals. Panelists in this session will share their experiences and insights with projects that have advanced nature-based solutions and natural infrastructure in coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and beyond.
