Getting the general public to engage with sustainability, climate science and environmental justice can be a tough challenge- but this recent conference is working hard to build engagement.
The OVERHEATED conference took place this past November at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The event, presented by nonprofit organization Support+Feed and Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish, brought climate change to center stage. The event featured a star-studded list of speakers, including UGA’s own Marshall Shepherd, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and Associate Director for Climate Science & Outreach at the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems.
The event was first held in 2023 in the U.K., with 2024’s event marking the first U.S. OVERHEATED conference. Among a large crew of environmental activists, business owners and scientists, Dr. Shepherd made an impact while discussing the ways climate change affects our lives.
“It’s an existential crisis that’s affecting us right now,” Shepherd said in a video posted to the OVERHEATED Instagram, “not 2080.”
